Eat, deep fry and be merry!

December 11, 2009

In honor of Chanukah starting tonight, here’s a little tidbit that I bet you didn’t know…

Most people associate Chanukah with potato latkes (yum!), lighting the candles (tradition!) and presents (yay!), and while all of these are fun, fun, fun, here’s another scrumptious part of the holiday…

Donuts? Yes, donuts.

Called “sufganiyot” in Hebrew, the tradition of eating deep fried donuts (and potato latkes) is derived from the same reason we light eight candles for the holiday – we commemorate the jug of oil which was supposed to last only one night but lasted for eight crazy nights!

As a big fan of all foods fried, this is one tradition in which I am happy to oblige!
