the new apartment?

February 11, 2010

This article in New York Magazine kind of made me think today.

It compares the current state of New York City office vacancies to the beginning of Loft Living, which of course started when factories and industrial buildings were transformed into residences.

According to the article, it would only make sense for people to start living in these empty office buildings.

But, really?

It makes some sense – it’s empty space that landlords need to rent and there are certainly people who have inhabited unconventional spaces in the past…but, really?

Could you live with flourescent lighting and acoustic ceilings? I couldn’t.

And even if you rip those out, you’re still lacking the charm and character that those big ol’ cast iron buildings of yesteryear- the columns, the brick, the beams, the arches, the giant windows and the super high ceilings and the creaking wood floors… (can you tell I like lofts?)

…So, no, NY Mag, I beg to differ. No to office living!
